Academy officials state the event is designed for anyone who wants to understand the Constitution, from those who have read it and want a better understanding, or those who have attempted to read it and given up. It’s also meant for people who don’t have the time to study the document.

The Academy recently conducted a survey of people who have read the Constitution and their survey team discovered that a major percent of those surveyed claimed they still don’t feel they understand it.

The Academy attributes this to the fact that languages change over time, and many words do not mean what they meant when the Constitution was drafted. “Today’s definitions vary greatly from those used in the late 1700s,” said Steven Ferry, Academy spokesperson. Ferry stressed the vital importance of reading the Constitution with reference to the original definitions in use at the time the document was written.

Ferry cites an example using the definition of “welfare” from the 1700s which meant the enjoyment of peace and prosperity, and other benefits of society and government, such as protection of rights, public safety, justice and liberty. He notes that today people often equate “welfare” as a handout from the government to help people in need; government assistance.

“People who attend will come away with a real understanding of the Constitution,” said Ferry. “This talk will unlock the original meanings intended by the Founders.”

Citizens Academy US is hosting the free online event on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 11am PT/2pm ET, entitled, Want to Understand the Constitution? This is the Talk! The event is expected to run for 2 hours, and registration is now open to the public at this link.
